Levels of Sedation Dentistry for Dental Anxiety

  • Minimal Sedation Dentistry: This type of sedation curbs your dental anxiety during your visit while still allowing you to respond to any directions from your doctor. You are awake with minimal sedation dentistry and will remember the procedure.
  • Moderate Sedation Dentistry: This type of sedation will provide even more relaxation for you but will hamper your response to any instruction. You will probably not have memories of the dental procedure performed.

Methods of Administering Sedation Dentistry for Dental Anxiety

  • Intravenous (IV) Conscious Sedation: This is reserved for moderate to severe cases of dental anxiety. An IV is administered prior to the procedure and the sedation drugs are controlled by your doctor, who has been trained and certified for this method. They will monitor your vital information and you will be awake throughout the procedure but will not remember it.
  • Oral Sedation: With oral sedation, an oral medication in pill form will be given to you upon arrival to relax you and abate your dental anxiety. If you opt for oral sedation dentistry, a companion must drive you home.
  • Nitrous oxide (NO2): Commonly referred to as “laughing gas.” It is administered through inhalation and will erase your mild dental anxiety within five minutes.
  • Local Anesthetic: Local anesthetic is used to numb specific areas. Lidocaine is a common dentistry anesthetic that allows your periodontist to perform procedures while keeping you comfortable and completely conscious.

If you have dental anxiety, ask about sedation dentistry when you make your appointment. Our goal is for you to have the most relaxed, comfortable experience possible.
